Why is the division system being used?

Addition and subtraction were just too simple and multiplication wasn't the kind of system they wanted, I guess.

The division system lets a player feel a lot better about where they are in the system. It is nicer to be able to compete for the top 10 in a division than to compete for a spot in the the top 100, it is better to say you are playing in the top 20 than somewhere in the lower part of the top 200. It just helps the player be more comfortable with his spot in a league.

Also for those that always want to know who the best of the best is. There are also the end of season tournaments, where the best players get to play it out to determine who actually is the best player in the league. So there will be an overall view in the end, of who actually claims the front spot.

Ahhh.. tons of questions I can't give you answers to. I know this is frustrating a lot of the time, I'll pass the questions on though and see if we get to answer one or the other.

I think having a tournament at least once in beta to determine the best of the best in a league would be a cool thing and quite possibly it will happen, but I don't have anything official for you on this yet. I'll let you know when we have something to share for sure though. :)

Another thing to keep in mind is that there will also be a pro league to follow. That should include quite a few good players. ;)

Q u o t e:
Nothing like psychological pandering to boost player esteem. There's a lot of psychology inherent to video games, this addition makes sense as well. Everyone like's seeing their name higher on any list.

Exactly, it just keeps the frustration out a lot. I have seen a lot of players that were really excited when they managed to get to first, second or third place in the copper league. Some players might laugh at it, but it did give these players a sense of achievement and I personally think it is a great thing. There are players of different skill level and playing style and if these players are excited about reaching a high rank on copper league, it is just so much easier to achieve if thousands of players can have this sense of "winning" a league instead of just giving two or three players this victory.

Why fixed? Don't you feel good about yourself? ;)

Edit: Actually Rob Pardo said pretty much the same thing when he introduced the divisions system at BlizzCon.
