Selecting a browser for the downloader
by Boon.iscool | 08/04/2010 01:22:42![]() Is it possible to enable some sort of option to be able to select what browser you use to download updates or patches, instead of it defaulting to internet explorer? I use firefox (like i thought most people did) and thus i hardly ever use IE unless i'm doing some debugging in safe mode or something like that. So internet explorer tends to deteriorate without me even knowing. I did have problems on my end with the LAN settings once or twice and those were easy to work around. But right now (patch 8), it's been close to an hour and i'd say i'm somewhere at 70% and it keeps freezing. Of course when i check my IE it's not working as it's supposed to. But i've run into the problem of i don't know when, or what caused it to stop working. So it would be nice if i was able to just tell the blizzard downloader to use firefox (or netscape or whatever people use) instead of getting stuck with the most hackable, most unstable browsers known lovingly as internet explorer. edit: I should also mention that i've had problems with downloading patch mirrors and installing them manually. I just never got them to work. edit edit: As a follow up the patch did finally finish with no errors. But i did have to keep opening and closing the downloader for it to resume patching. According to that data it more than doubles the next closest competitor and near doubles the total of all the remainders combined. But that is really besides the point. We use Internet Explorer because we can be assured that it is on pretty much every Windows based operating system that connects to us. We try to allow people to chose what browsers are used when possible but there are times where that is just not as feasible as others and using a single browser for that allows us to know what settings need to be changed where when an issue occurs. by Charlesps | 08/04/2010 02:05:56![]() I use Firefox myself and as part of my job i need to keep IE, FF, Opera, Safari, and Chrome handy for certain comparisons. I understand the desire to use the browser you are most comfortable with. I remember when first introduced the launcher for WoW. Arguments were made to get the links to open int he proffered browser and development made those changes but there were some things they just could not get to work right when relaying on other browsers. I know they know peoples desires for it so maybe some day it will be available but for now IE will have to be used for certain aspects of connectivity. Technical support needs your feedback.
