I think chat channels provides a fun and real time way to talk with other people playing Blizzard games.

I see chat systems like mIRC or even d2jsp taking the lead to provide chat systems.

I would guess the chat room function is disabled because it's not done, or we want you chuckleheads to actually play the game and not sit around chatting.
