Regarding the most honourable Colossus
by Monklo | 15/05/2009 17:47:14![]() So, I have been an advocate for the return of the original colossus since day 1. There have been many suggestions, good and bad, as to ways to improve the colossus. If a blue does happen to pop into this thread, I have two requests.
Some information on the tier placement of the colossus. Okay, that said, I would like to remid everyone why the colossus is here. The colossus is the protoss replacement for the Reaver. The reaver has several roles in the original SC, an exceptional worker raider, a powerful siege weapon, or a solid anti-ground back up. The reaver's uses were only limited by your imagination (and your patience for the slow slugs). So far, the colossus doesn't fill it's shoes. Last time we saw the Colossus was in the first Battle Report. Animation glitches aside, the colossus was only used in groups of one or two by the protoss player, and seemed exceptionally weak. Mass marauders easily brought down the colossus and its acompniment of zealots and stalkers. A pair of reavers would've decimated that terran army, and that whole game might have gone differently. Blues have already stated that Colossus work best in threes, but I have several issues with that:
Thier high-tier Thier height (as in they can be attacked by anti air weapons.) All of these contribute to make the colossus seemingly underpowered and a bad investment. Colossus seemingly only fit the role as a base raider, and a siege unit in large armies. But Blizzard, DON'T DITCH THE COLOSSUS. I love the unit and believe it has fantastic potential, especially with vision becomming more inportant, and the sight-range advantage of the height. The community discussions I have seen for the colossus seem to have two main suggestions:
Give the colossus a 'focus fire' ability, where the player can control the path of the colossus laser. When not in use, the colossus retains it's current attack. The second idea not only increases the micro potential, but makes the colossus a more devestating unit all together. A blue response to allay my fears of the colossus would be much appreciated I came, I screwed, I buggered off. - Sam, The Betrayal |

Colossus is Tier 3. He has a very powerful attack that strikes in a line relative to his position. He is a vital weapon against Terran infantry and Hydralisks which have become more of a threat when being protected by Roaches. Against Terrans you can go High Templar to deal with infantry, but Ghosts can really ruin that. Colossus is a safer choice. The original attack is not coming back. The old beam was just "more damage." Simple, but not fun. The current Colossus weapon encourages micro since it really matters who you shoot and the angle you shoot them from. Fortunately since the Colossus can step up and down cliffs and over friendly units he can move to the optimal position if you are fast enough. The biggest problem he has right now is with Neural Parasite on the Infestor. It's really giving the Colossus a hard time. We are working on that today. |
