Random, Protoss or Zerg

Although it is not a big deal, it would be a nice touch if Blizzard expanded the chose random race function to enable us to select from two races only or to exclude a race.

For example, if a player plays Protoss or Zerg, but not Terrans, he could chose:

Random, Protoss or Zerg

or

Random, Not Terran

(Either of these formats would work equally well unless further races were added in later expansions.)

This is something I would have liked to see already in original Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War. It is not some vital feature, to be sure, but it would be a neat thing to have.

I'll post something that I used in a reply regarding this very same discussion in the Beta forums :)

Let's switch to the exploiter point of view. A guy is really good with Terran and Zerg, but doesn't even know what a Pylon is and therefore he doesn't want to play Protoss at all. Since he highly values the possibility to deny his opponent the ability to know his race beforehand, he usually plays Random, since he has a nice 66% chance to end up with one of the two races he likes. He gets the advantage of masking his race with a 33% risk that he will end up playing Protoss.

Now, let's assume that your suggestion gets implemented. The very same player can now exclude Protoss and still play as Random. He now gets the same advantage as before, but now with a 0% risk of ending up with his less favored race.

Bottom line is: if you can't make up your mind about the race you want to play, there's no need for this kind of feature in game. You can flip a coin, play one game with each race, and so on.
Random is supposed to be random, not "partially random" or "2/3 random" :)

So make the enemy see that he excluded Terran. Problem solved.

The issue with this is not the fact that your opponent wouldn't be able to see it. Generally, you can 'perfect' two races (much easier to do, than three) and play as either Zerg or Terran. The problem is - you use a totally different playing style, depending on whether you face Zerg or Terran, which means that the 'almost random' guy in theory can have a really big advantage from the start (as you have to either scout very early or play a strategy that is probably not optimal). Just take a look at ZvT and ZvZ in SC:BW. Would you like to play Z vs Z/T, given the fact that differences between matchups are extremely big? You can look at it in many different ways, but in the end having a choice between one race or random is much better for the game.
