Open letter to blizz
by Moix2 | 19/03/2010 22:25:29![]() Since this was the best post and we want answers i'm reposting the letter Foreword: I just became aware of the official rules regarding beta key contests. At least we now have an answer to that question. I am still awaiting one regarding this letter. Assuming the thread survives, I will update this with Blizzard's decision regarding those that I feel were unfairly banned yesterday for holding contests. Blizzard Responder, As I have been directed here by your community manager Zarhym, allow me to raise my concerns about the forum’s moderation yesterday through the ‘correct&rsquo I will admit that I myself am guilty of sporadic ravings amidst what feels to many users like a draught of customer care. I am not beyond reproach for this activity. I freely concede that I have evaded a ban, posted half a dozen spam topics, commented on moderated items, and gotten around the language filter built into your forums. Do not be so quick to judge me as a forum troll. I am not. Please search my earliest post history assuming it still exists among whatever server hard drive that Zarhym has banished it to. Whatever posts coincidentally violating the code of conduct are purely satirical and only meant to remove the seriousness from a forum that needs to occasionally take a step back from itself. After more than two years of forum activity almost immediately after Starcraft II’s announcement at WWI I have never been banned until this month. After framing myself in what I believe to be an accurate light, permit me now to speak with objectivity about the activities on the forum of March 18th, 2010. It should be no secret at this point that a large majority of your active forum posters are disappointed with Blizzard’s decision to send beta key invite codes out to those that already have them. This is of course a decision for the company to make. I am not here to ask you to rescind key codes. I am rather here to ask a question. Are we allowed to ask questions on the forums? It seems silly in this context, but this is how I see it after the transpirations of yesterday afternoon. Among the woe that met myself and many of my fellow posters at discovering we had been left out of another wave of beta invites, there arose certain Robin Hoods who held contests to donate their extra key codes to the figurative poor. These contests were, at the hand of Prince John Zarhym, removed without a word as to the nature of their infraction. What Zarhym would call ‘spam threads’ began to pop up everywhere asking legitimate questions like, “Are we allowed to hold contests?” “Are we allowed to give away our beta keys?” “Do forum members count as ‘friends&rsquo There also were those who were justifiably angry at the deletions. For example; those who had won keys from user contests and had their email addresses deleted. They asked why eBay buyers were allowed to purchase these codes and then get free invites later from your friend invite program when they played by the rules and were not even allowed to have the leftovers. These were either deleted without remark, or, in some cases met with rude condescending tones such as, “Vent your rage elsewhere, perhaps to a cat, dog, or some other type of pet.” -Zarhym Perhaps this is simply my bias as a spurned forum member, but this does not seem like professional behavior. It did not answer any questions and only served to pour fuel over the fire that was burning all over the boards. This was insult to injury, plain and simple. I wish I could say it ended there. Immediately following this outburst a forum newcomer who didn’t know any better than to ask Blizzard questions was permanently banned for starting a thread on a moderated topic. Ghetto Overlord, a long time forum member and skilled Blizzard gamer was permanently banned and post wiped for circumventing a forum ban. This never happened. He made a thread earlier about a ban on a completely different forum that Zarhym never cared to read all the way through. I was permanently banned and post wiped for starting a thread asking the winner of my contest to reveal himself again, as I had lost his email address. As I said, I had never been post wiped before. I was furious. Every thread that I ever started, every game play suggestion I ever made was immediately thrown into the garbage because I asked the wrong question. There was no warning, no blue comment, no civil mention of the correct way to bring up by concerns until I tried to post again and saw that I had been cast aside forever for next to no reason. I used an old key from my old game collection to repost, and I admit the content of the following rant was inappropriate. I have attached a screenshot of this thread. Please view it now if you haven’t already. Harsh though it may have been, I received 2 full pages of responses lauding my so-called courage in standing up to what was unanimously considered a massacre of forum fairness. In those 2 full pages I received only 1 dissenting remark. I have a screenshot of the entire first page if it is requested. I do not claim to be a hero or some courageous poster of the rebellion, I simply want fairness. In honest opinion of this reader, was it fair to give my username a post wipe for asking another forum member what his email address was? Was it fair to post wipe Ghetto Overlord for simply posting a thread whose only crime was that it should have been in off topic? Was it fair to ban a new forum member who can never come back now because he doesn’t have access to another CD key? The ends do not justify the means. I do not necessarily deserve to have my posts restored. I simply want an answer from Blizzard regarding these questions. I believe that I have earned at least as much for my support of your products over the years. |
