My thoughts on random patroling of monsters
by Roybit13 | 04/03/2010 13:01:12![]() What always bothered me in almost all the RPG/hack&slash/m They just cramp in halls/forests/desert They just patrol a random path which is usually 3 steps here and 3 steps there. This was the case in D2, you could stand from a distance looking at hordes of monsters walking a meter here a meter there and at some point it becomes somewhat stupid. Exactly the same is hapening in wow for example (Who mentioned wow in a D3 forum ?! not me..) Make them do something that "matters", that has a meaning, that makes the player feel like he is invading their homes and sanctums. that the monsters have other things to do then to patrol a circle of a few pixels, it makes the world alive it gives it feeling and mood it changes the atmosphere. Let them cannibalize bodies before you approach them, torture tied slaves, practice demonic prayers that you interrupt by accident, sitting around a camp fire roasting a poor soul, im sure you can find a lot more ideas. We have seen it done in the WWI2008 gameplay trailer, where the cultists guys are standing in a circle and praying before the barb attacks them. I feel that it has some meaning, it helps "feel" the dungeon youre in, that things are happening before you arrive instead of just random monsters spawned as i got near that area.. Make the world feel alive, and that youre just a guest passing by and slaughtering everyone... I'd like to see much more of that. Thanks for reading my thoughts. [ Post edited by Roybit13 ] |

Cool. We like them too. Just because of the nature of having those types of scripted scenes in random environments it's going to be more of a flavor thing. We wouldn't want to get anywhere near replacing random monster spawns in randomized environments with scripted scenes. But having cultists chanting, zombies eating a corpse, monsters terrorizing townspeople, etc. all that stuff definitely helps the world feel more alive. Ugh. That was written... just terribly. I think I can safely and accurately say that the amount of scripting will be appropriate to the area and story being presented. Which gives you no real information. My favorite type of post! MIYAAHAHAHAHA! sink your teeth into the flesh of midnight night forever more, let them see it has begun |
by Bashiok | 05/03/2010 00:18:37![]() I do think we've shown some pretty in-depth examples of the scripting possibilities, but it's possible most people haven't seen them as they were within playable demos. There are some videos available that show some of it off though: http://w sink your teeth into the flesh of midnight night forever more, let them see it has begun |
