Black screen, game locks up on opening

When I try and start the game, my screen turns black and my cursor turns into an hourglass, but nothing ever happens after that. I can still move the cursor and use task manager to kill the game process and return to my desktop, but the game won't load. If I restart my computer I am able to run the game fine the first time I try, but if I close the game and then try to open it again at a later time it doesn't load. When I watch it on task manager it says "Running" for about 5 seconds and then changes to "Not Responding".
On one occasion I got a blue screen right to system restart when I tried to open the game. I usually put my computer into standby mode at night, but that doesn't seem to make a difference, as I've tried closing the game and opening it without going into standby and it still doesn't work.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ 2.01 GHz
2.00 GB DDR2 Ram
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT

Hansbrix,

Can you tell us more information about your computer? You can find most of the information if you go to Start -> Run -> type dxdiag and press Enter. (Windows Vista: Press the Windows Key (the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard) + R (at the same time). Type in DXDIAG and press Enter or click 'OK', this will open the DirectX diagnostic tool.)

Are you on Service Pack 3?

Also, lets see what programs you're using. Go to start->run->type 'msinfo32'->ok->expand "software environment"->running tasks->click on one of the running tasks->press 'ctrl a" to select all->then copy and paste that information to your reply.
